Rising Sun (1993)

Role: Eddie Sakamura
Starring: Wesley Snipes, Sean Connery, Tia Carrere, Harvey Keitel, Mako, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa

During a party at the United States offices of a Japanese corporation in Los Angeles, a professional escort is found dead. Police Detectives Web Smith (Wesley Snipes) and John Connor (Sean Connery), a former police Captain and expert on Japanese affairs, are sent to act as liaison between the Japanese executives and the investigating officer, Smith’s former partner Tom Graham (Harvey Keitel).

During the initial investigation, Smith believes the evidence indicates a sexual encounter and murder; however, Connor insists there is a deeper involvement by the corporation.

Notes: Well, this certainly follows the Michael Crichton tradition of modern science fiction and interesting plot twists. Connery’s performance was alright, and Snipes was pretty good. As a Japanese businessman/playboy, Cary was once again the scene-stealer of this movie, since he got to have a bit more fun with his role. Unfortunately, his character here has been referenced as an example of the typical negative stereotypes of Asian people portrayed in the media.
